DATE SOLD: 2015-10-04
LOT#: 1502-51

DESCRIPTION: Queen & Co, Philadelphia, ca 1900, astronomical floor regulator with four-legged gravity escapement, 78 inches tall, base extends 11 inches out from wall and is 22 inches wide. The gravity (Grimthorp) escapement movement is fitted with contacts for sending time signals or impulses to slave clocks. The drained mercury pendulum beats seconds, and will need to be re-filled with mercury. Clock has a fine silvered 24 hour regulator dial measuring 14 inches, displaying hours, minutes and seconds on separate scales. Queen and Co were laboratory instrument makers who have a history of making only a few clocks. It would appear this clock was made on Special order for the observatory of Gustavius Wynne Cook at Wynnewood, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. At the time of Mr Cook's death in 1940, his observatory was described as "the world's most elaborate amateur astronomical observatory." This clock comes with numerous documents pertaining to Queen and Co, the clock's history of ownership, and much other research done by its previous owners. The eminent horologist Lord Grimthorpe, officially Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe QC (1816-1905), earlier Sir Edmund Beckett, 5th Baronet as well as Edmund Beckett Denison, used the 4-legged gravity escapement in his regulators, which is similar in operation to his double 3-legged gravity escapement found in the Westminster Great Clock affectionately known as Big Ben. Fossette Collection.
CONDITION: The clock is in excellent condition overall; some adjustments will be needed for perfect timing after refilling of the mercury jar. Larger clocks may be expensive to ship, we recommend customers to inspect, purchase and pick up in person.

DATE SOLD: 2015-10-04
LOT#: 1502-89

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, "26 Ruby Jewels" Pennsylvania Special, 18S, GF OF SB&B recase, SW-LS, private label WE-DSD for "J Lowe & Co," fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, capped third wheel, "Adjusted to 6 Positions," DR, once was two-tone concentric arcaded pattern NI damascene, now quite thoroughly washed out, s#1742913. The plates were exposed to solution way too long, eliminating the gilding and rhodium plating that we all cherish, but the mvt was not abused or scratched, so chemical cleaning of the plates followed by rhodium plating and/or gold plating could be surprisingly effective, as the damascene impressions are not lost except where microspeckle may interrupt.
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, fair mvt condition overall due to washout, small amount of microspeckle, while settings are mint, there is very little oxide and slots are minimally marred; dial perfect save for one edge microfleck; bold hands near mint; case shows little wear, the slightest beginnings of edge brassing, few MFS, no dents or dings, complete ET detail with hardly any reduction; snug bow is brassy, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Pennsylvania Special "23 Ruby Jewels," 16S, GF OF NAWCo "Security" Railroad Model case with inner snap off lid below threaded rear, SW-LS, WE-DS "Pennsylvania Special" dial with Gothic numerals, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel, 23J, two-tone damascene with bright spotted pattern intersected by concentric gilt rings, s#2406971, comes with small attached GF chain and clip. Rare high grade private label, this example has an extremely well preserved movement two-tone color and luster. While the damascene pattern of this movement is the usual for most other high grade Illinois Pennsylvania Specials, this is actually the first example of this pattern we've seen with the 23 jewel 16 size Getty model version of the Pennsylvania Special as the few other examples of this watch we've observed have had a much simpler style of two-tone wavy ribbon damascene (a pattern being identical to that found on early Sangamo grade mvts, see page 46 of Roy Ehrhartdt's "1979 Price Indicator" for a photo of 23J 16S Pennsylvania Special with this plainer damascene).
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, near mint mvt condition overall, superb two-tone color and luster, few minimal small MFS, oxide spot on winding wheel; dial close to perfect with a mild FS at right side of center register, miniscule flake at lower right rim of seconds-register hole, some scattered miniscule edge flecks under the bezel; near mint hands; case style of some years later vintage than mvt though showing no sign of having held another mvt, no additional mvt casescrew marks, lever-set slot cleanly enlarged to accomodate this earlier mvt model, case shows medium wear, typical MFS, small mild ding on band at 10, ET detail largely lost, wear to brass around edges and in areas on pendant; tight replacement bow stretched out of shape to pair with this wide pendant style case, crown shows ample wear with slits filed for increased grip; good glass crystal; chain is worn with a good portion of wear to brass.
PRICE SOLD: $6,800
